Elementi

Aria

By the Air, this is Her Breath...

The Air is the lightest of the elements, the breath of life, the fresh breezes of change. Seasonally, it is Spring. At the east point of the Circle, it is the rising Sun, and is associated with conscious Mind, the intellect. Though we associate Air with the breath of the Goddess (Life), and particularly, the Maiden, Air is traditionally one of two elements corresponding to the masculine principle. We seek Air for clarity of thought, decision-making, conscious direction of will, the emergence of truth, change and the ability to adapt to change…we respect this element, lest it scatter our thoughts or blow away our plans, if we are not mindful of its full nature.

The Elementals associated with Air are the Sylphs. Other correspondences of Air include the Sword (in Tarot) or clubs in a common card deck, incense, feathers, cool and dry winds, Gemini, Libra, Aquarius (the Man), Mercury, Pallas Athena, Uranus, positive (as in battery charge, as differentiated from "good"), yang, the color yellow. Like the Tarot, many Wiccans (including the author), consider the double-edged blade of ritual tool (sword or athame) to be associated with the mental duality of Air (two sides to every issue or decision) and the conscious direction of will or mental energy. Other traditions associate Air with wands.

Acqua

By the Water, this is Her Womb and Blood...

It is from Water, as the womb of the Earth Mother, from which life first emerged, and it is Water (Her lifeblood) that nurtures us. Water is the feminine principle, and negative (as in battery charge). As Guardian of the West, it is the direction where the Sun sets, and where souls pass to the invisible world beyond. Water corresponds to the Moon that pulls its tides, and to the subconscious mind and memories, including all the past memories and lessons of the Soul. It represents the intuitive revealing of mystery and the raw emotion that can confound the logical rationale of Air, or turn mere knowledge into wisdom. From Water, we seek cleansing, sensitivity, understanding, compassion and love, and are mindfully respectful of instabilities that can emerge from our uncontrolled emotions.

The Elementals associated with Water are the Undines. Other correspondences include Cups (in Tarot), hearts (in common cards), the chalice or anything in the ritual circle that is liquid or contains liquid (the water dish, the cauldron. It is any body of water (sea, pond, lake, river), rain, yin, warm and moist wind, Cancer, Scorpio (the Eagle), Pisces, Moon, Pluto, Neptune, the Autumn season, the color blue (which most commonly marks the West Watchtower), other sea colors and silver.

Fuoco

By the Fire, this is Her Spirit...

Fire is the energy of Life, spirit of the Goddess, and the culminating light of the Sun God at Midsummer. At the South point of the circle, it represents the Sun at extreme South declination, when He fully warms the Earth Mother and infuses Her with the energy that will bring forth the abundant harvest. Fire represents the masculine principle, yang and positive (as in battery charge). We seek Fire for courage, conviction, energy, passion, strength of spirit, protection (ability to defend ourselves) and the ability to take action. We are aware of its propensity for rashness, anger and hostility if we fail to focus on the higher qualities of the spiritual warrior.

The Elementals associated with Fire are the Salamanders. Other correspondences include Wands (in Tarot), spades (in common cards), any source of fire (candles, balefire), hot and dry winds, Aries, Leo (the Lion), Sagittarius, Mars, the Sun, Jupiter. The color red most commonly marks the South Watchtower in a Wiccan Circle, although orange or gilt gold is also associated with Fire. Although many Wiccan traditions consider Wands (like the Tarot) to correspond with Fire (as the lightning rod that conducts or invokes spiritual energy into the circle), other traditions associate Fire with the sword or athame.

"Maliarda

Brucia, come la vecchia rossa sfera
di quel vecchio, dimenticato cielo,
lo sguardo di colei che nella sera

solleva della memoria ogni velo.
Ella danza con la sua bianca luna,
gustando il dolce frutto del suo melo,

bella e sensuale come mai nessuna,
candida e oscura, piena di armonia.
Maliarda lei, che pur essendo una,

sembra esser fatta d'ogni fantasia.
La sua parola fa giorno la notte,
ella è la regina d' ogni poesia.

Maliarda tu sei, di giorno e di notte. "
